Gooseberry

Gooseberry emerged in Brooklyn in the fall of 2019 as a power trio blending alternative rock, indie, blues, grunge, prog rock, and Beatles-inspired elements. The lineup includes:

• Asa Daniels: Guitarist, lead vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and primary songwriter who handles lyrics, melodies, and music; previously founded funk-rock band Baked Goods in 2012.
• Evin Rossington: Drummer, contributing bombastic rhythms.
• Will Hammond: Bassist, providing fluid lines that anchor the sound.

The band’s quirky name originated from a former member’s workplace, where they served gooseberry risotto, chosen over options like “creme fraiche” or “dog people.”

Their sound features dynamic shifts from distortion-heavy squalls and guttural shouts to melodic lullabies, emphasizing live energy and road-tested evolution. Influences span Nirvana’s grunge intensity, Beatles melodies, punk, and prog-rock, making them a versatile “rock band” resistant to easy categorization. As Daniels notes, the trio format allows leaning into extremes: “We can hit you with a squall of distortion… then shift on a dime and sing you a lullaby.
